Ordering a customised frame:
what to look out for?
Is the work right-angled?
Check the diagonals
What might go wrong
Our frames, whether square or rectangular, are always right-angled. If your subject is not right-angled, there is a risk that your work will not fit in the frame or that a gap will appear between the work and the frame.
Identical diagonals
To find out if your work is perpendicular, compare the two diagonals. They must be exactly the same.
A handy tool
On our website, you will find a handy tool that calculates the correct length of the diagonal using the Pythagorean theorem: in a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
Always check and compare the two diagonals to be absolutely sure.
What dimensions should I specify? ?
Stretched canvas & thick panels
Stretcher size
For a work mounted on a stretcher frame or thick panel, click on the ‘Stretcher or thick panel’ button. Enter the external measurements of the stretcher (or panel).
2.5 mm clearance
The frame is cut to leave 2.5 mm clearance between the stretcher frame and the rabbet; enough space to accommodate the thickness of the folded canvas and any minor imperfections.
How many mm do we cover?
This depends on the depth of the rabbet. In general, 3 to 7 mm on each side of the artwork will be covered. The depth of the rabbet is indicated for each profile. Bear in mind that wood is a ‘living’ material and slight deviations are possible.
Thickness of the stretcher frame
Please enter the thickness of the stretcher frame.
5 MM max
The stretcher frame should preferably be no more than 5 mm thicker than the height of the rabbet.
Over 5 MM
The greater the difference in thickness, the greater the distance between the back of the frame and the wall.
framing behind glass
Glass size
To frame a work behind glass or to frame a thin panel, a canvas board, etc., click on the ‘Size glass/thin panel’ button. Enter the outside measurements of the glass (or panel).
2 mm clearance
The frame is cut to leave 2 mm clearance between the glass and the rabbet; glass, panel, etc. fall easily into place this way.
Covering the bare minimum of the artwork
To cover as little as possible
Click the ‘Size minimum coverage’ button to cover as little of the canvas (or panel) as possible. Enter the outer dimensions of the stretcher frame (or panel).
a mere 2 mm
The frame is cut so that only 2 mm is covered on each side of the canvas (or panel). It is very important that the stretcher frame (or panel) is square.
shims to secure the artwork
To prevent the stretcher frame (or panel) from shifting, shims in wood, plastic or thick cardboard should be fitted in the space between the rabbet and the artwork.
