The role of the retouching varnishes is to eliminate localised sinking, i.e. undesirable porous or matt areas, and brighten up hues with a view to recommencing work, facilitate application and enhance bonding between layers.
Retouching varnishes may also be used as a temporary measure before applying the final picture varnish.
